Zac Goldsmith named Conservative 2016 Mayoral candidate

Zac Goldsmith has won the contest to be the Conservatives’ 2016 Mayoral candidate.

While his vision and plans for London will become clearer in the run-up to the election, Zac gave his thoughts on some issues – including housing, transport and the environment – in an interview with the Evening Standard in August. His official biography is on his campaign website.

Zac has stated:

  • a pledge to build 200,000 new homes across London in his first term as Mayor
  • he is anti-expansion at Heathrow airport
  • he would like more petitions and more say from the public on spending.

Baroness Jo Valentine, Chief Executive of London First, responded to the announcement, saying:

“Zac Goldsmith has shown great passion campaigning for issues in London. He has a strong record as an independently minded politician.

London First has worked constructively with Zac as a London MP over the years, and we will keep him and his team briefed on the issues affecting London’s business community.

“If he wins the race for Mayor, he will take the reins at a crucial time for London.

“The capital is a powerhouse that is critical to UK economy.

“But at the same time we need action to tackle the city’s growing housing crisis, to invest in transport infrastructure, and give all Londoners the skills they need for the future.

“On all of these issues the Mayor’s drive and determination will be critical for London’s success.”
