West End Streets Public Realm Priority Scheme SelectionJanuary 13, 2017
London First’s West End Streets (WESt) promotes the delivery of high quality public realm improvements in the West End, bringing together business leaders with a common interest in securing the West End as a long term driver of economic activity, critical to London’s success as a world city.
Whilst it is not a delivery agency, WESt group focuses its efforts on a small number of public realm projects at any one time, championing those projects, their funding, delivery and sustainability.
Past successes include securing funding for the roll out of the ‘Legible London’ initiative in the West End to deliver over 200 wayfinding signs in Central London in advance of the 2012 Olympics; the ‘Summer Streets’ initiative which sees the annual pedestrianisation of Regent Street for four Sundays in July; and, more recently Camden Council’s West End Project. This scheme, which is at the early stages of delivery, will transform Tottenham Court Road and St. Giles Circus, delivering significant improvements to the streetscape, new public spaces and returning it to two-way traffic.
We are now accepting submissions for the next round of priority public realm projects. Shortlisted schemes will be invited to present to WESt group at the end of May 2017 and the new cycle of public realm projects will be selected thereafter. The criteria is as follows:
- Delivers high quality public realm to the benefit of visitors, businesses and residents:
- Sustains and delivers improved economic growth;
- Takes innovative approaches to traffic management – reducing congestion and improving conditions for walking and cycling;
- Is high profile and deliverable by 2020-2025
