Sadiq Khan announced as Labour’s 2016 Mayoral candidate

Sadiq Khan has won the contest to be Labour’s 2016 Mayoral candidate. Baroness Jo Valentine, Chief Executive of London First, responded to the announcement, saying:

“Sadiq has a strong record of campaigning for London and Londoners, and has shown real understanding of the challenges facing the city, particularly the scale of the housing challenge we face.

“If he wins the race for Mayor, he will take the reins at a crucial time for London.

“The capital is a powerhouse that is critical to UK economy.

“But at the same time we need  action to tackle the city’s growing housing crisis,  to invest in transport infrastructure, and give all Londoners the skills they need for the future.

“On all of these issues the Mayor’s drive and determination will be critical for London’s success.”

While Sadiq has not yet formally laid out his vision for London, the Londonist blog has pulled together a comparison of his policy announcements to date with those of Tessa Jowell’s. Sadiq’s official biography can be found here on his campaign website.

Sadiq met with London First members last year to discuss his ambitions for the capital as Shadow Minister for London. In due course, we will engage with him – and the other candidates – to put forward the priorities of the London business community.
