London First comment on the High Speed 2 announcementJanuary 28, 2013
Commenting today on the Department of Transport’s ministerial statement on High Speed 2, Baroness Jo Valentine, Chief Executive of London First, said:
“The extension of the HS2 route is great news for London and the UK. A well-functioning rail network with new connections, greater capacity and faster journeys will not only support London’s economy but also provide benefits to the UK as a whole. It increases the viability of the HS2 project and will enable many northern cities to benefit from easier access to the engine room of the UK economy.
London already has the most congested rail and underground network in the UK, so it is important Government also commits sufficient resources to ensure that we can deal with the extra passengers. We need expansion of the London terminus at Euston Station. And HS2 must also be integrated properly with current major transport development such as HS1 and Crossrail, and planned ones such as Crossrail 2.”
