London First comment on changes to immigration rulesApril 8, 2013
Today (8 April), changes to the existing Immigrations Rules have come into force.
We back an immigration policy that welcomes migrants – be they workers, students or tourists – who add economic value to the UK. These amendments include: new flexible routes to post-study work for international students; simplification of the Intra Company Transfer process; and a commitment to maintain the current limits on Tier 1 exceptional talent and graduate entrepreneur and Tier 2 skilled worker routes for the remainder of this Parliament.
That’s all good news, but more could be done to maximise the opportunities that migrants can bring to London business. In particular, we still want to see the Government remove international students its net migration target, although we accept that this is unlikely to happen during this parliamentary term. Such a move would allow an export industry currently worth £8billion to continue flourishing without restriction.
Last month, the Home Secretary announced that the UK Border Agency is being dismantled and returning to the direct control of the Home Office. London First will continue working closely with its successor organisations to ensure that the views of London business on immigration are effectively voiced.
