Huge public support demonstrates case for Crossrail 2November 29, 2013
This morning, TfL and Network Rail published the results of the consultation on the proposed Crossrail 2 line that was carried out earlier this year.
Key aspects of the consultation results include:
- A huge response with a total of 13,933 replies (13,767 from the public and 166 from stakeholders)
- 95% of respondents strongly support or support the building of the line
- 2% of respondents oppose or strongly oppose the proposals
- Support amongst the public is higher for the Regional option at 84% than the Metro option at 73% strongly supporting or supporting the respective scheme options
London First has been at the forefront of the push to secure Crossrail 2. In February 2013 we published the findings of our Crossrail 2 task force, chaired by former Transport Secretary, Lord Adonis.
Responding to the results of the consultation, David Leam, Director of Infrastructure for London First:
“By responding in such overwhelming numbers, Londoners have given an emphatic stamp of approval to the Mayor to press ahead with plans for Crossrail 2
“Crossrail 2 is essential to keep London moving as the capital’s population rises to 10 million people by 2030. Without it, congestion on our tube and rail lines will become unbearable.
“Crossrail 2 has cross party support and backing from Londoners and business. The Mayor now needs to mobilise that support to transform Crossrail 2 from concept to project by May 2015.”
