Commenting on today’s government report, “Reforming Our Railways: Putting The Customer First”, Baroness Jo Valentine, chief executive of London First said:
“Renewed focus on the rail network will be welcomed by users of London’s excessively overcrowded trains, who cannot be expected to continue paying high annual fare rises without seeing the rail industry reduce its own costs.
“Continuing public subsidy is essential but in a world of constrained finances government should prioritise those rail services that support economic growth.”
Last month, London First issued its report examining London’s transport links, “London, Britain and The World”, which noted that fourteen times more people enter central London by rail in the rush hour than do in England’s next largest city – and half of them do so in conditions classed as overcrowded. The report also noted that while services in London and the South-east generate around half of all fare revenue, they receive the lowest levels of subsidy in the country.
